[jʌȖ], Charlotte M. (Mary), englische Schriftstellerin, * Otterbourne (bei Winchester) 11. 8. 1823, ✝ ebenda 24. 3. 1901; lebte zurückgezogen in ihrem Heimatdorf, stand religiös der Oxfordbewegung nahe. In ihren vielen erfolgreichen Romanen, die ein authentisches Bild des häuslichen Lebens ihrer Zeit geben, vertrat sie ihre religiösen Ideale und setzte sich, oft moralisierend oder sentimental, für viktorianische Familientugenden ein; verfasste auch Kinder- und Jugendbücher sowie religiöse Traktate und gab 1851-89 die Mädchenzeitschrift »The Monthly Pocket« heraus.
